Ambiguous loss according to the Mayo Clinic "is a person's profound sense of loss and sadness that is not associated with the death of a loved one. It can be a loss of emotional connection when a person's physical presence remains, or when that emotional connection remains but a physical connection is lost. Often, there is no sense of closure."
Ambiguous loss, a relational experience, happens when the fate of a loved one is uncertain, and their physical and/or mental state is unknown. This uncertainty can arise from situations like immigration, addiction, a catastrophic illness, or even when someone is physically present but psychologically absent due to Alzheimer's or another condition. Conversely, someone who is physically missing, like a missing soldier or child, can still be very much present in your thoughts and emotions. There is no clear ending or resolution with this type of loss.
Coping mechanisms like grief therapy can help you process your emotions and navigate the uncertainty. Finding supportive people and taking care of yourself are also crucial for healing.
